Last month we spoke about tuning out the noise of all the rhetoric, postering and inflammatory dialog which does no more than create chaos and divide our communities. This month I wish to share with you a significant result of doing just that…ignoring the noise, staying the course and strengthening relationships of importance to our industry, our communities and our families.

Have you ever heard the expression “Communication is Key”? By listening to you, our membership, communicating our concerns to those positioned to assist and taking measured action to help support those changes, the USHCA facilitated a recent trip to Saltillo, Coahuila Mexico to accompany 4 of our very best Texas legislators to meet with esteemed counterparts in Mexico.

Attending our multi-day event were the Speaker and Governor of Coahuila, various Coahuila state legislators, Saltillo’s Mayor, as well as their Ambassador to Texas.

The topics were significant and of timely importance as our joint attendees discussed relevant issues such as business and commerce, cultural exchanges and relationships and how to strengthen each. We discussed through in-depth dialogue our countries histories, their present and framing the future.

Mexico has been an invaluable partner for our industry in providing critically needed labor, materials, and supplies. The ability to work collaboratively with the leadership from our neighbors and our Texas officials proves tuning out the noise, ignoring the rhetoric, listening to one another, engaging in calm and beneficial dialogue only strengthens both sides of our shared border.

We are pleased these collaborative discussions are not a single one-off instance but ones that shall continue. We are extremely appreciative of the time, participation and dedication of the many elected officials who attended our events. A special thanks to Gaby Montemayor, Saltillo Liaison to Texas who was instrumental in the planning, scheduling and hosting of this event.

We are extremely pleased that an esteemed delegation from Mexico will be joining us in Austin in May so we may further work toward our goals and fortify ongoing relationships. We will provide additional updates regarding the May meetings in our April newsletter.

Until the next issue, do not hesitate to contact with questions, concerns or requests for assistance. Maintain your focus on actively pursuing the work you so expertly perform and do not forget… the City of Austin’s annual Capital Improvements Programs need your expertise. Success to all your pursuits.
